Program Overview

The Fundamentals for the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Patient Assessment-Based Certificate is a certificate of training program consisting of interactive learning modules and a remotely administered examination.

The purpose of the program is to enhance the knowledge, competency, and professional performance of Advanced Practice Providers practicing in the specialty of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS).

Who Should Participate

While the program is specifically designed for Advanced Practice Providers, all healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with obesity and metabolic disease, including nurses, dietitians, and physicians, are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Program Learning Outcomes and Competencies

  • Preoperative Management: Describe the preoperative management of patients undergoing metabolic and bariatric surgery, including the epidemiology of obesity, surgical indications, nutritional assessment, behavioral health evaluation, optimization of comorbid conditions, and patient education.
  • Surgical Procedures and Outcomes: Describe the indications and techniques for the outcomes of current primary metabolic and bariatric surgical procedures, including revisional and conversion operations, perioperative considerations, inpatient management, and discharge planning.
  • Postoperative Care: Review the optimization of early (<30 days) and late postoperative care following metabolic and bariatric surgery, including the evaluation, recognition, and management of complications; vitamin and mineral supplementation; nutritional monitoring and deficiency states; substance use disorders; diagnostic testing; adjustable gastric band management; and pharmacotherapy for weight recurrence.
  • Special Populations: Review the unique considerations for metabolic and bariatric surgery in adolescents, older adults, and pregnant patients.

Exam Eligibility

All healthcare professionals are welcome to participate in the educational content and claim available education credits. However, only Advanced Practice Providers (Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Clinical Nurse Specialists) are eligible to sit for the certificate examination.

Certificate Completion

Participants should complete all course modules before attempting the examination. Individuals who successfully pass the examination will be awarded the Fundamentals for the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Patient Assessment-Based Certificate.
