Core Obesity Medicine CME for the ABOM Examination Pathway

ASMBS is developing a 60-credit, online and on-demand curriculum designed to provide qualifying ASMBS Core Obesity Medicine CME credits that may be applied toward eligibility requirements for the 2027 or 2028 ABOM certification examination, as applicable.

ABOM’s CME requirements differ depending on the year in which a physician plans to take the examination. Candidates should carefully review the requirements for their intended examination year.

Planning to Take the 2027 ABOM Examination?

For the 2027 examination, candidates must complete 60 total CME credits, including:

  • At least 30 credits from ABOM-designated providers, which may include Group One credits and/or Core Obesity Medicine CME credits from Primary Educational Partner organizations.
  • Up to 30 credits from flexible obesity medicine education sources.
  • CME credits must have been earned after July 1, 2024.

Core Obesity Medicine CME credits earned through an ABOM Primary Educational Partner may be used toward the 2027 requirements. Candidates who are unsure whether they will apply for the 2027 or 2028 examination may wish to prioritize Core Obesity Medicine CME, as eligible Core credits may be applied toward either examination year.

2027 ABOM Examination Dates

  • Early Application Deadline: July 10, 2027
  • Final Application Deadline: August 7, 2027
  • Examination Window: October 12–26, 2027

All required CME credits must be earned and documented by the applicable application deadline.

Planning to Take the 2028 ABOM Examination?

Beginning with the 2028 certification examination cycle, ABOM is implementing an enhanced CME pathway.

Candidates must complete 60 total CME credits, including:

  • At least 45 Core Obesity Medicine CME credits from ABOM-approved Primary Educational Partner organizations.
  • The remaining 15 credits may be additional Core credits or qualifying Flex credits from flexible obesity medicine education sources.
  • Core Obesity Medicine CME activities are mapped directly to the ABOM Obesity Medicine Content Outline.
  • For the 2028 examination, eligible credits may be earned after April 1, 2026.

There is no maximum on the number of Core Obesity Medicine CME credits that may be applied toward the requirement. Candidates may complete all 60 required credits through qualifying Core CME offered by Primary Educational Partner organizations.

2028 ABOM Examination Dates

  • Early Application Deadline: July 10, 2028
  • Final Application Deadline: August 7, 2028
  • Examination: October 2028 — exact examination dates will be announced by ABOM.

All required CME credits must be earned and documented by the applicable application deadline.
