Certifications
Focused Practice Designation (FPD)
Target Audience: Surgeons
The American Board of Surgery (ABS) is offering a Focused Practice Designation (FPD) for surgeons in the United States who are engaged in the field of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS). The new FPD is available to surgeons practicing MBS who can demonstrate their clinical expertise and ongoing commitment to continuing education, accreditation, and obtaining comprehensive knowledge in the field. ABS has worked in conjunction with the ASMBS to define the standards of practice, participation, and knowledge that are required to be identified as a surgeon who focuses their practice on MBS. Certified Bariatric Nurse (CBN)
Target Audience: Professional Nurses
The Certified Bariatric Nurse (CBN) credential signifies a nurse’s expertise in delivering high-quality care to metabolic and bariatric surgery patients. Awarded by the CBN Accreditation Council, this certification demonstrates advanced skills and specialized knowledge in bariatric nursing. The credential is valid for four years, with the option to recertify to maintain it. Certificates of Training
ASMBS offers Assessment-Based Certificate Programs (ABC) designed to build expertise and recognition in specialized areas of practice. These programs provide structured instruction and training, with the goal of helping participants acquire specific knowledge, skills, and competencies.
Unlike certificates of attendance or participation, these programs include an assessment directly linked to the learning experience to evaluate mastery of the intended outcomes. Participants who successfully demonstrate competency receive a certificate recognizing their achievement. These structured training programs consist of multiple components:
- Web-Based Learning Modules – Asynchronous online content available through the ASMBS Learning Management System (LMS).
- Live Sessions – In-person educational sessions held at the ASMBS Annual or Weekend Meetings.
- Examination – The course concludes with an exam.

ASMBS Bariatric Fellowship Certificate

The ASMBS Fellowship Certificate recognizes surgeons who have completed training and met educational requirements for safe and effective bariatric surgery, as per ASMBS curriculum. ASMBS Surgical Technique and Advanced Robotics Training (START) Program
Target Audience: Surgeons
Application Window: Annually, in the Fall
The ASMBS START Program is a non-CME program includes virtual didactic sessions, local mentoring by an experienced bariatric robotics surgeon, and hands-on training at a robotics facility. It is designed for bariatric fellows in Fellowship Council-approved programs. Fellows will participate in a one-day on-site program and a special didactic session at the ASMBS Annual Meeting, with a stipend for attendees.
