To ensure a fair and unbiased election process by prohibiting any electioneering activities that may influence the voting outcome. This policy aims to maintain the integrity of the election and promote a respectful environment for all candidates.
Electioneering is any activity aimed at persuading members to vote for a particular candidate, whether that candidate is yourself, soliciting votes for a candidate, or electioneering on behalf of another member. ASMBS prohibits any form of electioneering from the time candidates accept their nomination until election results are published. This policy also pertains to members who are not running but are electioneering on behalf of running candidates.
Prohibited Activities:
The following activities are not permitted during the election period. The election period is defined as the time beginning when a candidate is officially notified of their placement on the national ballot and ending when the election closes:
- Public appearances intended to promote oneself or another candidate.
- Email communications that promote oneself or solicit votes.
- Social media or website posts used for self-promotion or to solicit votes.
- Promotion through newspapers, periodicals, or printed materials.
- Endorsements or promotions by industry partners or third-party entities.
- Mass campaigning efforts on behalf of any candidate.
- Participation in public appearances, publications, or presentations with promotional intent during the election period (these must be paused).
Note: Personal texts, phone calls, or communications are permitted if kept private and limited to close acquaintances.
Permitted Activities
The following are acceptable during the election period:
- Personal, one-on-one outreach to established colleagues (no mass communications).
- Continuation of professional activities, educational roles, or speaking engagements accepted prior to the start of the election period.
- Personal social media engagement, as long as it is not used for campaigning or promotion related to the election.
Consequences for Violations from a Candidate:
- First Offense: Disqualification of the candidate from the current election cycle.
- Repeated Offenses: Disqualification from future nominations or elections.
Consequences for Violations from a Member:
- Any member found electioneering on behalf of another member will be removed from any committee work and will no longer be eligible for any ASMBS awards or honors, including the ASMBS Hall of Fame.
No member or candidate should contact the ASMBS Nominating Committee directly. Any communication, questions, or reports of violations must be sent directly to nomcom@asmbs.org.
