About the Program
The Bariatric Endoscopy – Skill Acquisition Focused Evaluation Assessment Based Certificate ( BE-SAFE! ABC) offers a structured, skill-based pathway to verify proficiency in bariatric endoscopy. This initiative reflects our shared commitment to ensuring that surgeons are leaders in delivering high-quality, endoscopic care for bariatric patients.
BE-SAFE! is ideal for experienced professionals who have performed at least 50 upper endoscopies and are seeking formal recognition of their capabilities.
Program Structure
Video Curriculum: A series of 8 instructional modules.
Required for all participants prior to the written exam. Free for ASMBS and SAGES members.
Written Qualifying Exam: A knowledge-based assessment.
Passing score required to continue.
Hands-On Skills Verification Exam: In-person lab-based evaluation of procedural expertise.
Final step toward earning the BE-SAFE! credential.
How it Works
Step 1: Complete Video Modules
- Access the required curriculum on the ASMBS Learning Management System (LMS)
Step 2: Take the Qualifying Exam
- Format: Online, on the ASMBS Learning Management System (LMS)
- Fee: $150
- Passing Score: 70% or higher
- Results: Available within 1 week of exam completion
Step 3: Register for the Skills Exam
- Format: In-person
- Locations: Offered at the ASMBS Annual Meeting, SAGES Annual Meeting, and select regional courses
- Fee: $995
- Eligibility: Passing Qualifying Exam + minimum 50 upper endoscopies or FES certificate (Upload of case log or FES certificate required at registration)
- Results: Provided within 2 weeks of the exam date

What is BE-SAFE!?
BE-SAFE! stands for Bariatric Endoscopy – Skill Acquisition Focused Evaluation. This program verifies the advanced skill set of professionals experienced in bariatric endoscopy through scenario-based assessments.
Why take BE-SAFE!?

Is BE-SAFE! required?
BE-SAFE is not a requirement for anyone. However, many physicians who perform bariatric surgery or care for complications after bariatric surgery can benefit from doing BE-SAFE. These skills are not required often, but when you need them, it is helpful to know you can implement your skills safely. In some institutions, this type of skills verification can also help with credentialing in the endo suite as well as OR for bariatric endoscopy.
Is BE-SAFE! a certification?
No, BE-SAFE! is not a formal professional certification. It is a verification of your skill set through an Assessment-Based Certificate (ABC). Learn more about the value of Assessment-Based Certificates.
Eligibility Requirements
- Completion of the BE-SAFE! didactic video modules
- Minimum of 50 upper endoscopies OR completion of the Fundamentals of Endoscopic Skills (FES) (Upload of case log or FES certificate required at registration)
Preparing for the Exams
- Review all modules on the ASMBS Learning Management System (LMS)
- For the Qualifying Exam: focus on video content and key concepts
- For the skills exam: practice common bariatric endoscopy techniques and review real-world case applications
If You Don’t Pass
- You’ll receive written feedback
- You may retake the skills test at a future event
- Review video modules and consult examiners if needed

If you would like to receive a printed copy of your certificate by mail, please click here to submit your request. All submissions are verified to confirm eligibility.
