Fellowship in Clinical Obesity and Metabolism

UTHealth Center for Obesity Medicine and Metabolic Performance invites applications for our comprehensive Clinical Fellowship in Obesity Medicine. This one-year fellowship, the fifth in the nation, is designed for current residents or recent graduates of internal medicine, family medicine, or endocrinology training programs who wish to obtain rigorous, comprehensive subspecialty training in the area of Obesity Medicine. We are currently recruiting fellows seeking to begin the fellowship program on August 1, 2017 The deadline is February 15th for 2017 applicants. This fellowship has been designed to provide trainees with expertise and clinical experience in the emerging field of Obesity Medicine, with a primary focus on the evaluation and management of patients with obesity. Fellows will learn how to treat obesity through intensive lifestyle intervention, nutritional, behavioral, pharmacological and surgical means, as well as how to address the comorbidities of this disorder most effectively. We anticipate that trainees who complete this fellowship program will be prepared to pursue clinical and/or academic careers focused in obesity medicine and to become leaders in this emerging discipline.

Fellowship training in Obesity Medicine will occur over 1 year. Trainees will spend the majority of time in the clinical environment learning about obesity and its comorbidities. By the end of the fellowship, fellows will have a good understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of body weight regulation and a fundamental knowledge of current research in the field of Obesity medicine. They will be able to assess a patient with obesity or other metabolic disorders and to determine an appropriate treatment plan. Trainees will understand and utilize standard and innovative approaches to the treatment of obesity, including body composition and metabolic measurement, novel combination therapies, surgical and medical integration of care, and they will participate in outcomes related research and/or new and emerging treatment trials. They will be able to complete a full evaluation for patients with indications for obesity treatment both medically, surgically, and the med/surg combination patient and provide comprehensive care that leads to disease improvement.

Fellows will also develop the skills to be a competent teacher of Obesity Medicine to medical students, family medicine residents, and endocrinology fellows rotating in the center. Outcomes and standard of care research will be completed under the guidance of a member of the Program faculty.

This fellowship is available to physicians who will have completed an accredited residency program in internal medicine, family medicine, and endocrinology. Other backgrounds considered on a case by case basis.

Bariatric Clinical Coordinator

This full-time position will work in Grand View Bariatric and Metabolic Institute in the Grand View Surgical Associates office, under the supervision of the Medical Director. The role is part administrative and part clinical. The Clinical Coordinator will play a key role in the acquisition of new patients, chart patient volumes, offer marketing and community awareness of the program. This position will implement and grow the existing Bariatric program and educate the community and healthcare providers on the services offered for obese patients 18 years of age and older. The goal will be to optimize patient outcomes and improve the quality of life of patients. Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Conduct and oversee Information Sessions, Support Group meetings, and educational classes.
  • Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate the admission process of the bariatric program, working with the Bariatric team including the insurance navigator.
  • Perform all responsibilities/duties required by the department as defined in the scope of service, to ensure that the unique needs of the patients are addressed. Responsible for maintaining required manuals and policies and procedures as well as identify and implement performance improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in meetings and coordinate with various teams within the hospital system to improve patient care, patient satisfaction, and outcomes. Participate in the clinical management of the patient, including bariatric surgery.
  • Collaborate with physicians, staff, and all departments to best meet the bariatric patient care needs.
  • Remain current with research and treatment options of the bariatric patient.
  • Conduct daily rounds on the bariatric patient in the hospital to assess hospital care and post-operative status of patient.
  • Conduct follow-up phone calls after discharge to assist patient with post-discharge instructions and keep the patient from readmission. Seek patient feedback regarding program.
  • Serves as an educational resource for staff; assist in developing multidisciplinary training programs.
  • Create and oversee ongoing quality improvement plans.
  • Track outcomes, patient satisfaction, and financial data to support the program, processes, and improvement activities. Report key statistics as necessary.
  • Keep abreast of latest clinical research and incorporate evidence based medicine into program.
  • Work to meet the requirements set by ASMBS for Center of Excellence distinction.
  • Remain compliant with regulatory standards, ie. JCAHO.
  • Network with referring physicians and conduct com munity outreach programs.
  • Work with Marketing to develop meaningful materials for patients and referring providers.

Clinical Bariatric Advance Practice Provider:

Required Education and Experience:
Certification as a Physician Assistant within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. A minimum of 1 year prior experience as a Surgical PA required. Experience taking care of morbidly obese/bariatric patients preferred, but not required. Required Skills and Abilities:

This position will involve expanding and developing a program with statewide impact by building upon the accredited surgical program of excellence.

Successful candidates must have an MD, MD/PhD or DO degree (the employer accepts foreign educational equivalent) and be eligible to obtain an unrestricted West Virginia medical license. Candidates must be board certified and fellowship trained in bariatric/minimally invasive surgery. Additionally, candidates should be at an Associate Professor rank or higher, and have at least 5 years of experience in an academic medical center.
