Position Summary

Under direction of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) Director, serves as the liaison between the center and MBSAQIP (Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program). The MBS Coordinator assists in maintaining the documentation of the call schedule provided by all covering surgeons. He/ She assists in center development, managing the accreditation process and ensuring continuous compliance with MBSAQIP requirements, maintaining relevant policies and procedures, patient education, outcomes data collection, quality improvement efforts, and education of relevant staff in the various aspects of the metabolic and bariatric surgery patient with a focus on patient safety. The MBS Coordinator supports the development of written protocols and education of nurses detailing the rapid communication and basic response to critical vital signs that is specifically required to minimize delays in the diagnosis and treatment of serious adverse events. The MBS Coordinator will also perform as the clinical reviewer.


Registered Nurse with a Bachelor’s Degree from accredited college/university is preferred. Other experienced, licensed health care professionals may be considered.


  • 3 years of specialized experience related to Bariatric Surgery.
  • 3 years supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of trends in care of surgical patients with extensive knowledge of gastric bypass surgery.
  • Experience with computer processing and spreadsheets (Microsoft applications).
  • Master’s Degree preferred.

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required. One year experience required in the medical field as medical assistant, coordinator or scheduler required, three years preferred. Experience with medical electronic health records systems required.

Previous experience with bariatric patients and coordinator role preferred. Intimate knowledge of insurance qualifications for bariatric surgery preferred.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Strong typing skills and working knowledge of computer systems particularly with a windows based environment. Excellent written and verbal communication. Knowledge of healthcare computer scheduling system and medical office procedures. Ability to successfully work independently and may work some weekend or evening hours at support groups or informational meetings. Bariatric Dietitian

Minimally Invasive Surgeons of North County, Vista, CA

Minimally Invasive Surgeons is a new General and Bariatric surgery practice starting a bariatric surgery program at Tri City Medical Center although we will also be serving Palomar West Hospital and Scripps Encinitis Hospital. We will be offering Laparoscopic Band insertions, Roux-en-Y gastric bypasses and Sleeve Gastrectomy. We are seeking a motivated, innovative, and progressive Registered Dietitian to help develop our program that will begin with a concentration on preparing and sustaining patients for Bariatric surgery but with a plan to develop a medical weight loss program as well. Initially part time position with the plan to transition to full time.

Essential Functions

  1. Performs initial nutrition assessment and pre-operative education as well as participates in the screening of potential candidates for bariatric surgery.
  2. Conduct pre-surgical evaluations of bariatric surgical candidates working as part of a broader treatment team consisting of surgeons, mental health professional, and wellness advisers.
  3. Provide pre-surgical dietary consultations to prepare bariatric candidates for successful surgery.
  4. Review clinical and biochemical data to formulate a nutrition care plan encompassing socio-economic and psychosocial factors.
  5. Provide comprehensive post-surgical nutrition consultations guiding the bariatric patients through all phases of the post-surgical diet, conduct nutrition focused examinations to detect post-surgical complications, and communicate progress to the broader treatment team headed by a bariatric surgeon.
  6. Counsels post-op patients to ensure dietary compliance, nutritional adequacy and formulation of weight management goals throughout their 2-year post-operative course.
  7. Assesses and adjusts diet regime based on diet tolerance, weight changes, laboratory values and clinical parameters.
  8. Monitor and tailor each patient’s vitamin and mineral supplementation according to daily requirements, absorption capacity, supplement tolerance, food consumption, and clinical parameters.
  9. Lead bariatric support groups.
  10. Conduct bariatric information and education sessions.
  11. Counsel non-bariatric patients on non-surgical weight loss while addressing using nutrition to treat chronic lifestyle diseases.
  12. Work as part of a team with wellness advisers, mental health professionals, exercise physiologists, physicians, surgeons and other healthcare professionals.
  13. Complete all necessary documentation and communicate the nutrition care plan through written and verbal systems.
  14. Interprets, evaluates and utilizes pertinent research in obesity and nutrition to assist in “best practice” outcomes for the bariatric patient.
  15. Makes follow up telephone calls, emails, and/or letters to patients with questions regarding the bariatric diet, vitamin and mineral supplementation, and laboratory results.
