Mission

Description
The mission of the General and Foregut Surgery Committee is to develop evidence-based guidelines and identify unique diagnostic and treatment strategies required for the management of general surgical and foregut disease in patients undergoing metabolic and bariatric surgical procedures.
Objectives
- Increase awareness of the incidence of common general surgical and foregut problems in patients before and after metabolic and bariatric surgery
- Establish and disseminate guidelines an protocols for the management of general surgical and foregut problems before and after metabolic and bariatric surgery
Committee Goals
Short-Term
- Increase committee membership and participation
- Complete the Be Wise social marketing campaign
- Publish:
a. Gastroparesis: An Evidence-Based Review for the Bariatric and Foregut Surgeon
b. A Foregut Survey on the Scope of Practice Among Members of American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery
c. Systematic Review of Management of Gallbladder Disease in Patients After Minimally Invasive Bariatric Surgery
Specific Projects that Achieve Goals and Objectives
- Several new committee members were welcomed this year
- The committee is collaborating with the Public Education Committee and an outside vendor to produce social marketing campaigns featuring the most common comorbidities: diabetes, sleep apnea, NAFLD, gastroparesis, hiatal hernia, heartburn
- The manuscripts above are in near final or final publication stage
Mid-Term
- Disseminate the Be Wise videos to membership
- Begin new projects upon approval of project proposals
