Description

The mission of the General and Foregut Surgery Committee is to develop evidence-based guidelines and identify unique diagnostic and treatment strategies required for the management of general surgical and foregut disease in patients undergoing metabolic and bariatric surgical procedures.

Objectives

  • Increase awareness of the incidence of common general surgical and foregut problems in patients before and after metabolic and bariatric surgery
  • Establish and disseminate guidelines an protocols for the management of general surgical and foregut problems before and after metabolic and bariatric surgery

2023-2024 Committee Goals

  1. Complete the Be Wise social marketing campaign videos and disseminate to membership
    • Publish videos in different languages
  2. Publish Systematic Review of Management of Gallbladder Disease in patients after minimally invasive metabolic bariatric surgery
  3. Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) Use Following metabolic bariatric surgery Literature Review
  4. Management Strategies for Complex Hiatal Hernia in metabolic bariatric surgery candidates Literature Review
  5. GERD Definition Consensus Statement
  6. Bariatric Surgery Emergency Complications Managed by General Surgeons – collaboration with Quality Improvement & Patient Safety Committee
Specific Projects that Achieve Goals and Objectives
  1. Collaboration with the Public Education Committee and outside vendor to produce social marketing campaign videos featuring the most common comorbidities: Diabetes, Sleep Apnea, NAFLD, Gastroparesis, Hiatal Hernia, Heartburn – Complete
    • Proposal to publish videos in different languages submitted
  2. Systematic Review of Management of Gallbladder Disease in patients after minimally invasive bariatric surgery – publication being submitted to Obesity Surgery and JOGS
  3. Systematic review on the use of PPI following metabolic bariatric surgery outline in progress
  4. Management Strategies for Complex Hiatal Hernia in metabolic bariatric surgery candidates outline in progress
  5. GERD Definition Consensus Statement proposal submitted
  6. Bariatric Surgery Emergency Complications Managed by General Surgeons with QIPS Committee proposal in progress
