The Certified Bariatric Nurse (CBN) credential and logo represent the professional standards of the CBN Certification Program. These guidelines explain how certificants and third parties may use the CBN name, logo, and credential designation to ensure accurate public representation of certification status and to protect the integrity of the credential.
Who May Use the CBN Credential and Logo
A individual may use the CBN credential designation only if:
- Hold an active, current CBN certification in good standing
- Maintain an active, unencumbered RN license (or have an approved retired status)
- Use the credential consistent with your certification status
Use must stop immediately if certification expires, is suspended, or is revoked.
Acceptable Uses for Certified Bariatric Nurses
Acceptance and professional uses for a CBN in good standing include:
- Resume or curriculum vitae
- Email signature
- Business cards or professional letterhead
- Professional presentations or publications that reference your certification
- Official ASMBS-produced merchandise
Conditions of Use
To maintain the integrity of the CBN credential:
- Do not imply endorsement by ASMBS of any organization, product, or service.
- Do not use the logo or credential to promote, market, or endorse commercial products, services, or events without prior approval from ASMBS.
- Use must cease immediately upon expiration, suspension, or revocation of certification.
- The logo must be used in its original format and proportions. Do not alter, recolor, distort, stretch, or overlay the logo with other graphics or text.
- The logo must appear on a neutral background and remain clear and legible.
- The credential abbreviation “CBN” may be used after name (e.g., Jane Doe, RN, CBN). Do not pluralize or make it possessive.
- Use must accurately reflect the certificant’s current certification status.
Prohibited Uses
The CBN credential or logo may not be used:
- If certification is expired, suspended, revoked, or never granted
- By individuals who have not passed the CBN examination
- In any false, misleading, or deceptive manner
- On exterior signage, billboards, pricing lists, informed consent documents, or large-scale advertising
- To promote or endorse commercial products, services, or events without prior ASMBS approval
- In any manner suggesting ownership of the mark by any individual or organization other than ASMBS
Guidance for Listing Credentials
When listing professional credentials, the following order is recommended:
- Educational degrees
- Licensure
- National certifications
- Awards and honors
The CBN credential should appear under national certifications.
Requests to Use the CBN Logo (Third Parties)
Healthcare organizations, vendors, partners, or other third parties must receive approval before using the CBN name or logo in external materials.
Examples of third-party use include:
- Hospital or employer websites referencing CBN certification
- Marketing brochures or recruitment materials
- Vendor materials, sponsorships, or advertisements
- Event materials or signage
How to Request Approval
Please submit a written request that includes:
- Organization name
- Primary contact name, title, and email
- Intended use (where and how the logo or name will appear)
- Whether the use is commercial in nature
- Dates the materials will be used or published
- Sample materials (draft or final), such as screenshots, PDFs, or image files
