BEAM-ED (Bariatric Examination, Assessment, and Management in the Emergency Department) is a web based clinical tool developed as a collaborative project by the ASMBS and the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) in effort to fulfill an ACEP objective to compile clinical resources for the care of bariatric patients in the emergency department. Members of ACEP and the ASMBS Clinical Issues Committee (CIC) developed the tool to educate ER physicians and provide clinical guidance on the assessment and management of common types of complications seen after current bariatric procedures. Although developed primarily for use by ER physicians, it is also a useful tool that can be shared with members of the bariatric surgery allied health team. The tool is a living document that will undergo routine periodic evaluations by the ASMBS CIC with revisions as determined necessary.
