John Paul Gonzalvo D.O. FACS: Dr. Gonzalvo is a Tampa native. He graduated from Amherst College in Massachusetts and then went on to graduate in 1996 from Osteopathic medical school at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida. He completed an internship at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. John Paul then went on to do his surgical residency at the University of South Florida. When he finished his residency he stayed on at USF as a Clinical professor with a position at the Bay Pines VAMC. While at the Bay Pines, he developed an interest in bariatric surgery and, he helped start an open gastric bypass bariatric surgery program. During his tenure at the BP VAMC he became Board certified in General surgery (2003). After participating in the ASMBS Masters of Bariatric Surgery course Dr. Gonzalvo became interested in expanding his clinical abilities to include Laparoscopic Bariatric surgery. He then was accepted and spent a 1 year fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Florida training in Minimally Invasive Surgery and Bariatric surgery. When he graduated from his fellowship Dr. Gonzalvo took a private practice job in the Clearwater area doing MIS and Bariatrics as well as all general surgery. During those years in private practice he was part of the teaching staff of Largo Medical Center surgical residency program. 8 years later he was asked to join the faculty of the USF to create the new TGH+USF Bariatric Center. He has become Assistant Professor of Surgery and Co-director of the Bariatric Program at Tampa General Hospital as well as the Associate Director of the MIS/Bariatric fellowship. He developed a weight loss program for retired NFL players and participated in clinical research. Dr. Gonzalvo enhanced the MIS/ Bariatric fellowship at USF by adding Robotic surgery training. John Paul has developed a busy clinical practice at the TGH+USF Bariatric Center that includes Bariatric and foregut surgery. After 5 years as a member of USF he has moved on to create a new Bariatric and Metabolic Institute at Advent Health Tampa. This move is a great opportunity to expand Bariatric services to the Tampa Bay community. Dr. Gonzalvo is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, as well as the President of the Florida Chapter of the ASMBS.
