About the Provider

Homero Rivas, MD, MBA, FACS, FASMBS, DABOM is a Professor of Surgery, and Associate Dean of Innovation and Future at the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Dubai, UAE. Formerly he was Associate Professor and the Director of Innovative Surgery at Stanford University. He was also the Co-Director of the Stanford Fellowship in Minimally invasive Digestive and Bariatric Surgery. As a digestive and bariatric surgeon, he has 20 years of experience. He is a pioneer and leader in numerous state-of-the art innovative techniques of minimal access surgery including: magnetic surgery; natural orifice surgery; POEM and more. He has been involved in minimal access surgery both in the US and in nearly all continents, as a surgeon-in-training, a practicing surgeon and also as teacher of other expert surgeons. Dr. Rivas is Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Fellow and the Co-Chair of the International Committee for the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and he has been inducted as Honorary Fellow in multiple international surgical societies. Presently, he is the Vice-President of the California Chapter for ASMBS.

Additionally, Dr. Rivas has been involved in Digital Health and Telemedicine for many years. He has several research projects using wearables before and after bariatric surgery, to improve weight loss and adherence to treatment. He is a strong proponent of novel technologies in healthcare such as 3D printing, Drones, artificial intelligence engines, etc.

Dr. Rivas is the recipient of numerous awards, has given numerous presentations throughout the world and he is the author of multiple peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. He is the Co-Editor of the book “Digital Health, Scaling Healthcare to the World”. He is advocate of Hispanics in the USA and he champions mHealth and telemedicine among them and internationally.

Dr. Rivas holds an MBA from the Cox School of Business at the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX.
