Dr. Charan Donkor graduated from The University of Western Ontario, with a double major in Chemistry and Biochemistry. He obtained his medical degree from SABA University School of Medicine, and completed his surgical training at the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital, and Columbia University at Harlem Hospital Center. He also completed a rigorous minimally invasive and bariatric surgery fellowship at the prestigious Baptist Health MIS and Bariatric Surgery program in Miami. Dr. Donkor has years of experience in general and bariatric surgery, with special interest in robotic surgery, weight loss surgery, single incision gallbladder surgery, minimally invasive hernia and anti-reflux surgery, colon surgery for diverticulitis and cancer, gastric cancer surgery, and breast surgery. He is the founder of C.A.R.E.S (the Center for Advanced Robotic and Endoscopic Surgery), is an active member of the American College of Surgeons, the Society for Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, the International Hepatopancreatobiliary Association, and the American Medical Association, and is also a core faculty member of the East HCA GME surgical residency program and Nova Southeastern Medical School. In addition to performing highly specialized and gastrointestinal surgery, he is the author of several peer reviewed medical journal publications on advanced surgical techniques, and has given many presentations and lectures on robot-assisted surgery. Due to his vast experience and knowledge in robotic surgery, Dr. Donkor also serves as a proctor educating and training surgeons in new robotic procedures. He has given many interviews in the field of medicine, and appeared on two episodes of “fat city,” a well known docuseries detailing the bariatric surgery process.
