About the Provider

Andrew J. Duffy, MD, FACS, FASMBS, DABS-FPDMBS is an American Board of Surgery certified General Surgeon and is fellowship-trained in minimal access surgery from Cornell and Columbia. He is an Associate Professor at Yale School of Medicine where he has been in practice since 2004. He completed his Medical School and Surgical Residency at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School. He is the Associate Surgical Chief of the Digestive Health Service line and the inaugural Medical Director of the Hernia Center for Yale-New Haven Health System. He has additional subspecialty certification through the American Board of Surgery in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He offers minimally invasive surgery of the abdomen and GI tract, including laparoscopic and robotic techniques. He also offers complex abdominal wall reconstruction and repair of the most complex abdominal hernias. Dr. Duffy has a long history in surgical education having served as the Associate Program Director for Yale surgery for 9 years. He has developed simulator programs and utilized other technology to help develop the Yale surgical residents and fellows into top Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgeons He is the interim Program Director for the General Surgery Residency Program at Yale and is Associate Program Director of the Yale Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Fellowship Program. He is committed to helping develop the next generation of surgical expertise and excellence and using technology to continuously improve training methods and surgical outcomes. Surgery training needs to evolve to provide the best opportunities and experience for our trainees and he is leading the culture change with a diverse and exciting complement of trainees. Despite his educational and administrative roles, he remains a busy clinical surgeon, performing over 400 surgeries per year. His Clinical focus is on using surgical robotics and other advanced techniques, materials, and technology in an effective, cost-efficient manner while maximizing clinical outcomes and shortening recovery time and discomfort for patients. Dr. Duffy is dedicated to helping individuals with acute and chronic issues related to hernias or with their stomach, intestines, gallbladder, or other abdominal organs. He specializes in all type of primary and recurrent abdominal wall hernias. He has extensive experience at surgically treating hernia surgery-related complications, including mesh issues. He has expertise in clinically challenging revisional surgery by all techniques and runs a large referral practice that extends well beyond the region. He also offers minimally invasive techniques for correcting hiatal hernias, GERD, acid reflux, paraesophageal hernias, complications of prior stomach and hiatal hernia surgery, achalasia and other swallowing disorders. He also specializes in laparoscopic and robotic procedures for obesity, including gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, revision of adjustable gastric banding and revision of prior bariatric surgery such as vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG) and sleeve gastrectomy
