Virginia Mason Center for Weight Management – Seattle/North End

Virginia Mason is seeking a Weight Management/Obesity Medicine Physician to join our team. This provider will work primarily at one of our North End regional medical centers with one day per week on our main campus in Seattle. There is some allowance for remote work as well. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in obesity and metabolic health management, certification through the American Board of Obesity Medicine or completion of an obesity medicine fellowship, and the ability to collaborate and program build with our bariatric surgeons.

Responsibilities
Diagnosis and multimodal treatment of patients with obesity and related metabolic disorders. This includes behavioral counseling/lifestyle coaching, pharmacotherapy, as well as care coordination with dieticians, bariatric surgeons, physical therapists, mental health providers, etc. Help manage patients with post-bariatric surgery metabolic issues such as weight regain, hypoglycemia, vitamin deficiencies, etc.
Provide full-time outpatient clinical care.
Participate in Center for Weight Management program development activities (e.g. MBSAQIP meetings, care conferences, growth/strategy meetings, etc).

Qualifications
At least 2 years of outpatient clinical experience or pending graduation from an obesity medicine fellowship. BE/BC in internal medicine, primary care, family medicine, or endocrinology.
Certification by American Board of Obesity Medicine (completed or pending)
Active Washington State medical license in good standing prior to start date.
Active DEA certification prior to start date.
Active BLS Certification.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Experience and/or interest in health services research is preferred but not required.
Proficiency with or ability to become proficient with the Cerner EMR.

Job Summary:
The Clinical Nutrition Specialist conducts assessments on nutritional status and manages the nutritional care process of patients at Tampa General Hospital (TGH) in a timely cost-effective manner. Qualifications –
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in food and nutrition or Dietetics from an institution with an accredited program is required. Current license as a Dietitian by the Florida Department of Professional Regulation and registration by the American Dietetic Association’s Council for Dietetic Registration is required. Master’s degree and/or certification in specialty area are preferred.
• Experience: Requires diplomacy and ability to interact with others, with excellent written and verbal communication skills. Keeps abreast of new trends and developments in nutrition and utilizes this knowledge in current practice. Proficiency with multiple software applications such as: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Cbord and/or Computrition.
• Minimum of 5 years performing duties as a Clinical Dietitian in a dedicated area of nutrition at Tampa General Hospital. Holds a master’s degree in nutrition or nutrition related field. Satisfactorily maintains Specialist Certification in a dedicated aera of clinical service (e.g. CDCES, CNSC, CSO). Research Fellowship Opportunity in Obesity, Bariatric Surgery, and Health Services Research

The Department of Surgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is pleased to announce a funded research fellowship starting in July 2025. This position offers an exceptional opportunity to study the rapidly evolving field of obesity management—both surgical and medical—from both clinical and economic perspectives.

The position is based at NYC Health+Hospitals/Bellevue Hospital, home to one of the highest-volume bariatric programs in the United States, with approximately 3,000 bariatric procedures performed annually as well as a robust medical weight loss program. The program also has strong ties to NYC Health+Hospitals and the NYU Langone Health system, which perform an additional 2,000 bariatric procedures annually.
Fellows receive mentorship from surgical faculty as well as the NYU Population Health Science Scholars Program, with support for a fully funded Master’s degree in Clinical Investigation (MSCI). While the center has a uniquely robust volume in bariatric surgery, interested fellows may also pursue projects in other fields, according to their interests.

Current research areas of emphasis include:
• Comparative effectiveness of bariatric surgery and anti-obesity medications
• Management of weight recurrence and bariatric complications
• Impact of health policy changes on surgical practice and outcomes
• Healthcare disparities among vulnerable populations, including Medicaid, uninsured, and limited English proficiency
• Optimizing bariatric surgery perioperative care pathways

Who Should Apply: This fellowship is ideal for surgical residents who are taking academic development years in the middle of their clinical training. However, we also welcome clinicians in other specialties and PhDs.

Education and Work Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in food and nutrition or equivalent (some certifications will require Bachelor’s): Required
Master’s Degree: Required, only if eligibility for examination began on or after 1/1/24
Experience as a Clinical Dietitian: Preferred
Dietetic internship or its equivalent: Required
Licenses/Certifications:

Registered Dietitian (RD) within 6 months of completion of residency program: Required
Essential Functions:

Performs nutrition assessment, reassessment and patient/family education. Performs all responsibilities/duties required by Registered Dietitian as defined in the scope of practice, to ensure that the needs of patients are addressed.
Conducts and coordinates outpatient nutritional counseling sessions and services. Follows ADA Medical Nutrition Therapy and other appropriate nutrition counseling protocols. Complete required documentation and maintain organized files for client charts, participation data, and communication logs.
Acts as an educational resource for health care team personnel including dietetic interns, patients, family members and community. Serves as instructor or assistant in presenting nutrition-related classes, seminars and workshops including tobacco treatment programs, heart and cancer prevention seminars, seniors’ seminars, wellness and fitness seminars, etc.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Bariatric Clinical Coordinator

The Bariatric Clinic Coordinator will serve as the institutional expert and primary point of contact for implementing new ASMBS (American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery) Guidelines into clinical practice. This individual will serve as the intermediary between Health plan, Permanente Medicine, and our regional health partners to maintain Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence Designation in close partnership with the Service Line Medical Director. This individual will collaborate with Utilization Management to ensure that all components of the Medical Coverage Policy are met.

Essential Responsibilities:
Data Collection and Reporting: Oversees collection of preoperative, intraoperative, 30-day postoperative, and long-term (six month and annual thereafter) follow-up data components for the program through the effective utilization of the hospital medical record systems and through a coordinated effort with bariatric team and partner programs. Identifies streamlining and process improvement opportunities in the data collection process. Demonstrates appropriate utilization of resources necessary to obtain valid, reliable data for entry into the program. Utilizes software applications for data collection and analysis. Responsible for the accurate, complete and timely entry of data into the database. Participates in data compilation for audit and (re) accreditation for site visits. The Coordinator will help administrate the MBS Committee and must attend at least two of the three required meetings, one of which must be the annual comprehensive review meeting, as well as the majority of all other meetings. The MBS Coordinator assists in program development, managing the accreditation process, ensuring continuous compliance with MBSAQIP Standards, maintaining relevant pathways and protocols, patient education, monitoring outcomes data and collection, quality improvement initiatives, and the education of relevant staff with a focus on metabolic and bariatric patient safety. The MBS Coordinator supports the development of written protocols and education of nursing staff detailing the rapid communication and basic response to critical patient findings that are specifically required to minimize delays in the diagnosis and treatment of serious adverse events. Manages all of the requirements of the Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery Program.
Maintains and ensures patient pre-operative and post-operative accredited compliance.
Works closely with the Medical Director to identify issues with the workflow and provides evidenced based solutions.
Coordinates verification that submitted candidates have been optimized.
Serves as institutional resource for staff and surgeons regarding all aspects of bariatric care and subsequently provides data driven solutions.
Maintains a strong knowledge of the Kaiser Medical Coverage Policy for Obesity/Bariatric Surgery and ability to interpret the Medical Coverage Policy

The practice is closely aligned with different community hospitals and healthcare systems across the greater Chicago area. In addition, the practice has longstanding contracts with different self-insured companies (ie United Airlines, Walgreens) and value-based providers, which have contributed to our growth in otherwise challenging times for private practice.

We are the premier private practice surgical group in the city of Chicago. The practice has a very strong academic presence locally and nationally. In addition, we have clinical appointments at a local university. Your application for clinical professorship is strongly encouraged. The Chicago Institute of Advanced Surgery is very unique in having its own fully accredited fellowship in both bariatric and advanced GI MIS surgery while thriving in private practice.
