  • You would practice at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colorado with some future clinic shifts at Platte Valley Medical Center in Brighton, CO.
  • Your hours will be Mon-Fri 8am-5pm, no call, no weekends
  • You will see approximately 16-18 patients per day for H&Ps, follow ups, and assisting with new consults
  • You will have the opportunity for first assist work in the OR 1-4 times per month, so while this experience is required, this is NOT a heavy surgical position

Position Description

The Department of Surgery at The University of North Carolina is seeking applications for a full-time academic minimally invasive foregut, bariatric and hernia surgeon to join our Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery. The Division of GI Surgery is among 9 Divisions in the Department of Surgery. The Division currently includes faculty members that provide a broad array of clinical services for patients with general surgery, upper and lower GI disease. In addition, the Division of GI Surgery maintains a minimally invasive Advanced GI Surgery fellowship. Patients are referred to our surgeons from across the Eastern United States for management of a variety of benign and malignant GI disorders via open, laparoscopic, and robotic approaches. Academic appointment will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience.

Faculty members within the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery must possess a desire to commit to all three missions of the department and school of medicine, including the clinical, education, and research missions. Regarding the education mission, faculty members are expected to regularly participate in the education of medical students, residents, and fellows. Regarding research, a commitment to any one of a broad array of research interests is desirable, including but not limited to clinical, outcomes, health services, basic science, translational, ethics, education, or global surgery research. Regarding the clinical mission, faculty members must be committed to delivering high-quality clinical care that is of value to the patients of UNC.   • Performs initial nutrition evaluation of patients as defined in the Weight Center (WC) nutrition protocol

Must have publications (manuals on obesity/bariatric surgery; online resources for RDs; book chapters, journal articles, newsletters, etc); must be an excellent public speaker. Registration Eligible (RDE) status acceptable, conditional on taking and passing of the next scheduled Registration Examination for Dietitians (6 months). The Obesity Medicine physician will assist in our system and the Bariatric Surgery and Medical Weight Loss Program in their approach to the disease of obesity, obesity related comorbidities, and its complications. This position will complement our committed approach to delivering the highest quality care for our patients.

RSF Bariatric Surgery and Obesity Medicine Program, established in 2009, was accredited first as a Center of Excellence through the Surgical Review Committee (SRC) in 2011 and has been reaccredited as a Comprehensive Center under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) on two successive occasions, last in 2018. In May of 2019 we added the Obesity Medicine component to our program and was certified by MBSAQIP as a comprehensive center with Obesity Medicine Qualifications in December 2019. Our bariatric surgical program has a strong focus on pre-surgery education and post-operative success. Our multidisciplinary program provides excellent care through the program’s 2 surgeons, Obesity Medicine physician, 3 physician’s assistants, 4 dietitians and behavioral therapist. Recently, our program has worked alongside the ASMBS and our anesthesia team to develop an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program, and the improvements in length of stay and our decrease in opioid utilization within our program after surgery have been presented at numerous national conferences. Obtains and evaluates relevant historical information and incorporates this into the evaluation and treatment planning. Maintains responsibility for test selection, scoring, and interpretation and understands the limitations of and correctly applies the norms of each test used. Utilizes psychometrics for the administration and scoring of tests as appropriate and ensures the accuracy of that administration and scoring through the review and supervision of those team members. Prepares reports from the evaluation data. Provides psychotherapy, counseling education, cognitive, retraining, behavior management and/or crisis intervention as needed to treat problem areas identified in the assessment process. Develops appropriate treatment plans and discusses these with the patient and/or appropriate others to ensure they participate in the development of the plan and consent to treatments. Trains professional team members involved in the care of the patient about appropriate observational methods and behavior management techniques, and appropriate supportive roles in the patient’s neuropsychological treatment.

UTHealth Center for Obesity Medicine and Metabolic Performance invites applications for our comprehensive Clinical Fellowship in Obesity Medicine. This one-year fellowship, the fifth in the nation, is designed for current residents or recent graduates of internal medicine, family medicine, or endocrinology training programs who wish to obtain rigorous, comprehensive subspecialty training in the area of Obesity Medicine. We will be recruiting fellows seeking to begin the fellowship program on August 1, 2022, from July 15, 2021 – November 1, 2021. The deadline is November 1, 2021, for 2022-2023 applicants. This fellowship has been designed to provide trainees with expertise and clinical experience in the emerging field of Obesity Medicine, with a primary focus on the evaluation and management of patients with obesity. Fellows will learn how to treat obesity through intensive lifestyle intervention, nutritional, behavioral, pharmacological and surgical means, as well as how to address the comorbidities of this disorder most effectively. Trainees who complete this fellowship program will be prepared to pursue clinical and/or academic careers focused in obesity medicine and to become leaders in this emerging discipline.

Fellowship training in Obesity Medicine will occur over 1 year. Trainees will spend the majority of time in the adult clinical environment training obesity and its comorbidities. Didactic education includes the physiology and pathophysiology of body weight regulation and fundamental knowledge of current treatment and research in the field of Obesity medicine. On completion of fellowship, a fellow will be able to assess a patient with obesity or other metabolic disorders and to determine/facilitate an appropriate treatment plan. Trainees will understand and utilize standard and innovative approaches to the treatment of obesity, including body composition and metabolic measurement, novel combination therapies, surgical and medical integration of care, and outcomes related research and/or new and emerging treatment trials. They will be able to complete a full evaluation for patients with indications for obesity treatment both medically, surgically, and the med/surg combination and provide comprehensive care that leads to disease improvement.

Fellows will also develop the skills to be a competent educators in Obesity Medicine for medical students, residents, and endocrinology fellows rotating in the center. Outcomes and standard of care research can be completed under the guidance of a member of the program faculty and collaborating departments.

This fellowship is available to physicians who will have completed an accredited residency program in internal medicine, family medicine, or endocrinology. Other backgrounds considered on a case by case basis. Applicants must have completed a United States or Canadian residency program.
