Academic Bariatric Surgeon Opportunity

SUNY Upstate – Syracuse, NY

The Department of Surgery at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY has an exciting opportunity for a full-time, Bariatric/Minimally Invasive Surgeon at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor to join our team.

This individual will join an established general and bariatric surgery practice at the Upstate Community Campus which includes: General and Minimally Invasive Surgery, Bariatric, Breast, Plastic and Colorectal Surgery. The successful candidate will be Fellowship Trained in Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgeon with experience in Endoscopy, Foregut and Bariatric surgery. They will be qualified for a faculty appointment in the Upstate Department of Surgery and participate in the education and training of medical students and general surgery residents. The Metabolic and Bariatric Center at the Upstate Community Campus is a designated MBSAQIP accredited Comprehensive Center facility which is committed to excellence in patient care and outcomes.

The surgeon responsibilities will include: Clinical coverage of General and Bariatric surgery at Upstate Hospital and Community Campus, Inpatient/ outpatient general surgery consultation, Participation in General surgery and Bariatric surgery call, Supervise the peri-operative care of bariatric and general surgery patients as needed, Provide clinical over site for surgical house staff, residents and students in caring for patients on General Surgery and Bariatric Surgery service, Participate in medical student, resident and continuing medical education activities which includes didactic lectures, departmental conferences, CME programs, teaching rounds, resident evaluations and other educational activities within the department. Upstate Medical University includes a two-campus, 715 bed University Hospital which serves as the tertiary care referral center for Syracuse and the Central New York region. This region comprises 17 counties and a population of over 1 million. Upstate Medical University is located in Syracuse, NY adjacent to Syracuse University.

Upstate Medical University also includes the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Health Professions and Graduate Studies. The Syracuse area is culturally diverse with outstanding college sports, many cultural events, nationally recognized public and private schools and is surrounded by numerous outdoor recreational opportunities. Also notable are excellent public schools and a high quality of life. The candidate must be board certified or eligible in General Surgery, Completed a Bariatric/Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship and eligible for an unrestricted New York state medical license. The successful candidate will provide excellent patient care, participate in the teaching and training of medical students and surgery residents and should be eligible for a faculty appointment at the Upstate Medical University College of Medicine. Midlevel provider and resident support are available to assist with patient care and provide support for this practice.

Our practice is currently a solo practice operating out of private setting. The practice operates out of: • Preston Memorial Hospital in Kingwood, WV (MBSAQIP Certified Bariatric Center) • United Hospital Center in Bridgeport, WV (WVU Medicine Hospital System) • Akkary Surgery Center in Morgantown, WV (AAAHC Certified Cosmetic Surgery Center). The practice is very busy with excellent reputation and a very strong word of mouth referral base. Dr. Akkary, founder of the practice, is Board Certified in General Surgery, Cosmetic Surgery and Facial Cosmetic Surgery in WV and PA and is Diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and Facial Cosmetic Surgery in CA. The practice includes General Minimally Invasive Surgery, Bariatric Surgery and Cosmetic Surgery. Position details and requirements: • Board certified/eligible in General Surgery • 2 years of experience after General Surgery residency is preferred • Fellowship in MIS and/or Bariatric Surgery is preferred • Colorectal experience is preferred • Cosmetic Surgery experience is preferred • Applicants, eligible for an interview, will be asked to provide their operative log • Applicants, eligible for an interview, will be asked to provide HIPAA compliant 3 operative videos of surgeries they performed in the last 2 years • Ability to perform upper and lower endoscopy • The practice employs a Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellow through the Fellowship Council, this is the only MIS Fellowship Program in WV • The new Surgeon will be on the Fellowship Faculty and will work closely with the fellow • Call is expected to be 1:7 at United Hospital Center and can be taken from home • Preston Memorial Hospital is an accredited MBSAQIP Comprehensive Center • Excellent leadership, marketing & administrative support The practice employs a dedicated Marketing Coordinator that will work closely with the new Surgeon to promote their practice • The practice has an additional office location at the Physician Office Building at United Hospital Center in Bridgeport, WV • This position provides income support for the first year (can be extended) with tier based generous incentives.
