Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Coordinator

The Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) Coordinator serves as the liaison between Mercy Medical Center, the MBSAQIP, all surgeons performing Metabolic and Bariatric surgery, and if applicable, all general surgeons providing call coverage. As an integral part of a multidisciplinary Metabolic and Bariatric team, acts as an advocate, educator, and counselor for patients. Takes an active role in medical record review, monitoring various regulatory and compliance initiatives, and recommends corrective actions to management. The MBS Coordinator facilitates communication with the primary care provider, specialists, and the patient. Utilizes the nursing process and/or specialized nursing skills to achieve stated and agreed upon patient outcomes in the delivery of holistic patient care. Provides leadership by working cooperatively with ancillary and other health professionals in maintaining the standards for professional nursing practice. Assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and documents nursing care of patients in accordance with facility and departmental policies and in accordance with standards of professional nursing practice.

Requirements:

  • Work responsibilities require the knowledge of theories, principles and concepts acquired through completion of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Graduation from an NLN accredited school of nursing.
  • Requires the maintenance of current professional nursing licensure in the state of Massachusetts with current registration.
  • Work requires skills normally obtained through three (3) to five (5) years’ nursing experience. Knowledge and experience in Bariatric surgical patient care preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with facilitating/leading workgroups focusing on clinical issues with minimal oversight from management. Documenting the work of the group, including the use of quality improvement tools, and ongoing monitoring of measures of success.
  • Knowledge of continuous quality improvement tools and techniques and demonstrated past experience in leading, facilitating, and coaching multidisciplinary teams in successfully improving processes.
  • Work requires the analytical ability to resolve highly complex problems requiring the application of scientific or technical principles, theories and concepts and in-depth, experienced-based knowledge.
  • Work requires the ability to act as a resource to staff/departments, assign and follow-up on the work of other employees, or perform other duties requiring a comparable level of communication skill. Strong written and verbal communication skills necessary.

The clinical milieu would include patients with obesity, as well as patients with hernia, abdominal wall pathology, and a portion of broad-based general surgery practice. The schedule for this position is Monday-Friday with no holidays, weekends or call. The ideal candidate would have some history/interest in nutrition, fitness and weight management. At least 2 years of prior PA or NP experience is required for this position. New grads will not be considered.

APRN: Nationally certified licensed healthcare provider who provides primary and/or specialty nursing and/or medical care in a variety of healthcare settings. Functions in collaboration with a physician according to a standard care arrangement and specialty certification. Practice emphasizes health promotion, disease prevention and the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic health problems. Certifications may include: acute care, adult, family, gerontology, psych and mental health, neonatology, pediatrics and women’s health.

PA: Nationally certified licensed healthcare provider who provides primary and or specialty medical care (the practice of medicine) in a variety of healthcare settings. Functions the collaboration agreement of a Physician, (as per O.R.C. 4730) performs complete histories and physicals on patients of all ages to establish and record patient’s current health status and to develop a working diagnosis and treatment plan to provide continuing medical care, including daily examinations, writing orders, chart notes, discharging patients and completing discharge summaries. Clinical Health Psychology Postdoctoral Residency- Bariatrics

The Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry at West Virginia University School of Medicine offers a one or two year fellowship program in Clinical Health Psychology, with an emphasis in Bariatrics. One resident position is offered each year, with the option of a 2nd year pending agreement between the resident and Fellowship Director.

Description of Training Program:
The Clinical Health Psychology Postdoctoral Residency- Bariatrics has been designed to provide trainees with expertise and clinically relevant experience within the field of health psychology, with an emphasis on training relevant to obesity and bariatric surgery. The goal of the postdoctoral residency program is to prepare the trainee for independent practice as a psychologist working within the field of obesity medicine/bariatrics. The resident will become familiar with treatment options for obesity including nutritional, behavioral, pharmacological, and surgical modalities. Additionally, the resident will become knowledgeable regarding the common comorbidities of obesity. To this end, the core rotation of the postdoctoral residency program includes participation in WVU’s multidisciplinary Bariatric Surgery Program. As part of this rotation, the resident receives in depth training and supervision related to the provision of comprehensive pre-surgical psychological evaluations and treatment to patients both pre and post-surgically. Additional rotations within the Bariatric Program will be assigned throughout the year in order to gain an understanding of the various components of the surgical program (i.e., rotation in medical weight management, nutrition clinic, surgical clinic, observation of nutrition courses). Bariatric supervisors will be Stephanie Cox, Ph.D. and Cassie Brode, Ph.D.

In addition, the resident will receive educational experiences to complement knowledge of obesity and related comorbidities. Additional rotations within the Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry may include psychological evaluation and treatment of chronic pain. The trainee may also participate in additional experiences within the WVU Medicine system including observation with Diabetes Clinic, Pulmonology, or Cardiology. These additional rotations may be altered in terms of intensity in the event of any changes in clinical demands within the Bariatric Program. Additional rotations will be supervised by appropriate Behavioral Medicine Faculty. Four days per week are spent in clinical services with ½ day allocated for education/ didactic, and ½ day for research.

St Vincent Carmel Hospital has well-trained and compassionate hospitalists and a cooperative Emergency Department. The dedicated bariatric unit has 25 beds and the hospital is a tertiary referral center with patients coming in from surrounding states.

Meridian Surgical Group employs two Physician Assistants – one is surgical based and the other is office based. We also employee an advanced laparoscopic CSFA. The office has a bariatric board certified RN as well as an extremely competent and knowledgeable office staff.
