Bariatric Psychologist

Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN

We are seeking a full-time health psychologist for the Division of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC). The position will be at the academic rank of Assistant Professor. The Division of Psychology is home to more than 20 clinical and research psychologists, an APA-accredited clinical psychology internship, and an APPIC-approved postdoctoral fellowship program. Qualified applicants should have specialty training, education, and clinical experience in health psychology and weight management. Preference will be given to applicants who have experience in surgical weight loss and have an academic record of teaching and/or research in the field. Applicants should be licensed or license-eligible as a psychologist with health service provider designation in Tennessee.

The Weight Loss Center, which houses medical and surgical programs, takes a comprehensive, team-based approach to helping patients lose weight and improve their overall health and quality of life. Health psychologists are embedded within the clinic and work closely with other members of a multidisciplinary team. The primary role of the health psychologists is to determine patient readiness to undergo weight loss surgery via the pre-surgical evaluation, which includes a clinical interview, review of records, and psychological testing. Through the pre-surgical evaluation, behavioral or psychological factors that may negatively impact a patient’s safety or success after surgery are identified, and an individualized treatment plan is formulated to improve a patient’s candidacy. Because of the rapid and significant life-changes that result from bariatric surgery, postoperative psychological care is often needed. Each behavioral health provider in the clinic is responsible for running one post-operative group per week. There are also opportunities, if desired, to provide individual psychotherapy to pre- and post-operative patients. Please see https://www.vanderbilthealth.com/weightloss/ for additional information about the Weight Loss Center.

In addition to providing clinical services, the faculty member is expected to participate in clinical teaching and supervision. This would include participation in seminars for trainees in psychology, psychiatry, and other specialties. There are opportunities for trainee supervision at predoctoral and postdoctoral levels. In addition, we have an environment rich with research opportunities.

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is committed to building a culturally diverse faculty, and strongly encourages applications from minorities and members of other underrepresented groups. VUMC offers an attractive benefits package and competitive salaries. Nashville is a fast growing and diverse city. It offers various extracurricular opportunities in a beautiful temperate climate.

Please see https://www.vumc.org/psychiatry/psychology-division for additional information about the Division of Psychology and https://www.vumc.org/psychiatry/ for further information about the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

Applicants should submit a CV and letter of interest to Jennifer Blackford, Ph.D., Psychology Division Director at Jennifer.Blackford@VUMC.org
