In The Spotlight: ASMBS Health Equity Committee

ASMBS Health Equity Committee

Hear from the Committee Chair –
Charles Thompson, MD FACS

An Interview With The Chair

What about this committee’s mission is the most important to you?

Education is a key component of our mission that I’m truly passionate about – specifically educating students on how to care for themselves and how to take an active role in the health of their communities. Sustained, positive efforts in promoting this education will invariably lead to a healthier future.

How has being part of this committee benefitted you professionally or even personally?

As a member of this committee, I have the potential to help so many more patients than simply by doing so one procedure at a time. I am committed to helping eradicate obesity, so this avenue of outreach allows me to dedicate myself to the fight in an even more effective way.

What of this committee’s accomplishments are you most proud of?

Our committee has a number of projects that our members are passionately working on. The ASMBS Pathway Program being one that has truly taken off, with enthusiastic feedback from both participating students and the ASMBS members who helped bring it to life.

Final Thoughts on the ASMBS Health Equity Committee?

The ASMBS Health Equity Committee is charged with enhancing the well-being of our communities through promoting medical interventions and educating the public on the devastating affect of obesity. We work to ensure efforts in this regard are made for all segments of society regardless of the community individuals may represent. We’d love for you to get involved, if not with the committee itself, then by lending your expertise by becoming a mentor or even just spreading the word about our mission.”
