Mission

  • To improve the care and treatment of people with obesity and related diseases
  • To advance the science and understanding of metabolic and bariatric surgery
  • To be the recognized authority and resource on metabolic and bariatric surgery

Description

The Emerging Technology and Procedures Committee advises the Executive Council, other committees and general membership of new technologies and procedures and how these may impact current and future care of patients. The goal of the committee is to not only evaluate these technologies and procedures, but also to better educate our members on how they can evaluate and possibly incorporate them into practice.

Objective

  • Engage all stakeholders in the field of emerging bariatric and metabolic procedures, in the form of educational sessions or by inviting them to contribute data and new information to our web-based educational tools

Committee Goals

Short-Term

1) New Procedures Committee – ET&P Committee will be involved as part of a process for new procedures and technologies
2) Definition of Approved Procedures/Acceptable – EC evaluation around these definitions we created
3) More startups involved in Society; inform members on advisory boards committee able to give guidance
4) Update/make more accessible/promote the Emerging Technology ASMBS page: https://asmbs.org/resources/emerging-technologies-and-procedures-inventory – add SADI, SIPS, endoscopic sleeve, one anastomosis; utilize the online Industry Form: https://asmbs.org/emerging-tech-industry-form

Mid-Term

1) “Surgical Technology Speed Dating” at ASMBS Weekend and/or ObesityWeek 2019
2) Shark Tank at ObesityWeek 2019
3) IRB Templates – create a Tool Box for New Procedures on ASMBS website; collect templates via committee members

Long-Term

1) Early access to new technologies
2) Establish ASMBS as one of the main societies for reference and authority for new procedures especially endoscopic interventions
3) More emphasis and presence at our annual meetings

Specific Projects that Achieve Goals and Objectives:

1) Voting member of the New Procedures Committee
2) Dr. Mikami reviewing Definition of Approved Procedures/Acceptable
3) Dr. Wilson to join Corporate Council meetings
4) Contacted ASMBS IT to make ET&P page more visible on website; Dr. Mikami reviewing current inventory
5) Feature ET&P in the ASMBS Top 5 on the 5th Newsletter
6) Plan and promote “Surgical Technology Speed Dating” for ASMBS Weekend and/or ObesityWeek 2019 through ASMBS email blasts, personal contacts
7) Collecting past plans for Shark Tank (Dr. Eid started this idea), contacts for sharks, plan, secure grant
8) Re-engage, or remove from committee goals, IRB Templates
9) Dedicated Innovation Summit
10) Continue to engage industry with form on website, other activities – increase awareness via website and ASMBS Top 5 on 5th Newsletter
11) Maintain the Clearing House, a list of contacts for all emerging technology industries using ASMBS faculty disclosure information
