Mission

  • To improve the care and treatment of people with obesity and related diseases

Description

The Emerging Technology and Procedures Committee advises the Executive Council, other committees and general membership of new technologies and procedures and how these may impact current and future care of patients. The goal of the committee is to not only evaluate these technologies and procedures, but also to better educate our members on how they can evaluate and possibly incorporate them into practice.

Objectives

Engage all stakeholders in the field of emerging bariatric and metabolic procedures, in the form of educational sessions, or by inviting them to contribute data and new information to our web-based educational tools.

Committee Goals

Short-Term

  1. One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB) as an ASMBS endorsed procedure
  2. Review FDA Surgical Stapler Labeling inquiry

Mid-Term

  1. Streamline and standardize emerging technology and procedural clinical research

Long-Term

  1. Committee will be involved with Pathway for Endorsement of New Devices and Procedures Committee as part of a process for new procedures and technologies to focus more on evaluating new procedures
  2. Early access to new technologies
  3. Establish ASMBS as one of the main societies for reference and authority for new procedures especially endoscopic intervention 4. More emphasis and presence at our Annual Meetings

Specific Projects that Achieve Goals and Objectives

  1. OAGB as an Endorsed Procedure proposal submitted by committee; Committee Chair participated in the OAGB Pathway for Endorsement for New Devices and Procedures review; approved as an Endorsed Procedure May 2022
  2. Provided recommendations regarding stapler labeling

Mid-Term

  1. Review New Devices and Procedures applications
  2. Review Emerging Technology and Procedures Committee Industry Form submittals
  3. Update the Emerging Technologies and Procedures Inventory list on the ASMBS website

Long-Term

  1. Chair of the committee sits on the Pathway for Endorsement of New Devices and Procedures Committee
  2. Collaboration with the Clinical Issues Committee in evaluating emerging technology and procedures
  3. Maintain the Emerging Technologies and Procedures Inventory list on the ASMBS website

2021-2022 Completed Projects

  1. The committee submitted a proposal for OAGB as an Endorsed Procedure; Committee Chair participated in the OAGB Pathway for Endorsement for New Devices and Procedures review
  2. Secured speakers and prepared materials for the ICG in Bariatric Surgery Emerging Tech session at the 2022 ASMBS Annual Meeting
  3. Reviewed FDA Stapler Labeling inquiry and provided recommendations
