Celebrating Black History Month

A Commitment to Health Equity, Inclusivity and Diversity

As we step into Black History Month, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) takes a moment to honor and reflect on the significant contributions of Black Americans to the medical field and beyond. This month and beyond, we recognize the contribution that Black Americans have made to the foundation of this country. The need for this recognition is a vital reminder of the ongoing struggle for equity and justice, particularly in healthcare, and in every aspect of society.

At ASMBS, we recognize that health disparities disproportionately affect the Black community, particularly in the realms of obesity and metabolic disorders. Our mission is to advocate for equitable healthcare, ensuring that all patients, regardless of race, have access to the life-saving treatments and support they need.

We are committed to:

  • Educating our members on the importance of cultural competence and understanding the social determinants of health that affect treatment outcomes.
  • Supporting research to uncover and address the root causes of healthcare disparities.
  • Promoting diversity within our organization and the metabolic and bariatric surgery community, understanding that a diverse medical workforce is crucial in providing culturally sensitive care.
  • Collaborating with organizations that work towards the advancement of health equity.

This Black History Month, ASMBS reaffirms its dedication and commitment to breaking down barriers to healthcare access and narrowing gaps in disparate outcomes by ensuring that the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion and justice are infused throughout its daily operations. We celebrate the diversity of our community and recognize the strength it brings to our collective mission. Let us honor this month by renewing our commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and the fight against healthcare disparities and inequities.

Together, we can make a difference. Together, we can create a future where healthcare equity is not just an aspiration but a reality.
