Artificial Intelligence in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery: Current Applications and Future Direction from the ASMBS Emerging Technology and Procedures Committee

This ASMBS white paper examines AI applications across metabolic and bariatric surgery, highlighting clinical opportunities, current limitations, and recommendations for responsible, clinician-led implementation.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being integrated across the perioperative continuum in metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS), including preoperative risk stratification and counseling, intraoperative guidance and automation, postoperative monitoring and engagement, and administrative optimization. This ASMBS Emerging Technologies & Procedures (ET&P) Committee white paper synthesizes the current evidence base for AI applications relevant to MBS, with emphasis on clinically actionable use cases and limitations. While AI has the potential to enhance precision, safety, efficiency, and scalability of MBS care, its adoption must remain clinician-led, rigorously validated, equitable, and transparent. This paper provides a structured overview of current applications, identifies key challenges, and outlines ASMBS recommendations for responsible implementation.
