About the Provider

Dr. Yewande Alimi obtained her undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering at Washington University in St. Louis where she was a John B. Ervin Scholar. She went on to complete her medical degree in Atlanta, GA at Emory University School of Medicine, where she was awarded the 2013 Evangeline T. Papageorge Outstanding Student Award. Dr. Alimi completed her internship and residency in General Surgery at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington DC in June 2020. She has been recognized for excellence in clinical care, teaching, and research by Georgetown University School of Medicine and in 2019 was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society as a resident inductee and was awarded the 2018 Marie J. Simonian Award for Clinical Research. She also served as the resident representative to the physician leadership council. Dr. Alimi returned to Medstar Georgetown University Hospital and Medstar Washington Hospital Center after completing her minimally invasive and bariatric surgery fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine where she held the appointment of clinical scholar and a Leadership Education in Advancing Diversity (LEAD) Scholar. During her time as a LEAD scholar she worked towards and created a workshop focused on managing and healing microaggressions through faculty led and peer led support groups providing a framework to approach microaggressions and bias in medical training through the framework of allyship. She specializes in the surgical treatment of obesity via minimally invasive techniques. Dr. Alimi also sees patients for reflux disease, gallbladder disease, hernias, and other gastrointestinal conditions. Dr. Alimi has presented at numerous conferences and has authored more than 14 peer-reviewed abstracts and publications, including the Annals of Surgery and Obesity Surgery. Her research interests include disparities in access and outcomes in bariatric surgery and clinical outcomes research in the realms of hernia and bariatrics. She serves on many national committees, including the American College of Surgeons, where she was the most recent chair of the Resident and Associate Society Executive Committee, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, and currently serves as the candidate member to the board.
