Dr. Walter J. Chlysta earned a Bachelor of Science degree in
Chemistry and Pre-medicine at Kent State University. He then
completed his Doctorate of Medicine at The Ohio State University
College of Medicine where he graduated Cum Laude and was
inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He
completed his internship and residency in General Surgery at
Akron General Medical Center.
Dr. Chlysta has several academic appointments. He is a Clinical
Associate Professor of Surgery at Northeastern Ohio Medical
University, Clinical Associate Professor of General Surgery at
Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has
achieved Fellowship status in The American College of Surgeons
and is also a Fellow of the American Society of Metabolic and
Bariatric Surgeons. He also is a member of The Society of
Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.
Dr. Chlysta has been in private practice since 1999. In addition to
offering minimally invasive General Surgical procedures, his
practice focuses on minimally invasive weight loss surgery and
Heartburn surgery. He started The Bariatric Center at Akron
General Medical Center in 2002 and led it to achieve certification
by the MBSAQIP program. He was one of the first surgeons to
introduce minimally invasive bariatric surgery to Northeast Ohio
and was the first surgeon to perform minimally invasive weight loss
surgery in Summit County. He has personally performed over
1000 bariatric procedures with excellent results.
