Vafa Shayani, MD FASMBS

Dr. Vafa Shayani completed his undergraduate degree at University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), and medical school at George Washington University in Washington, DC. He completed his General Surgery residency at George Washington University and after an additional year of concentrated training in advanced laparoscopy, started his first professional appointment at Loyola University Medical Center in 1996. He ultimately attained the rank of Associate Professor of Surgery and the Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship Program at Loyola before his departure in 2007. Since then, he has been practicing as a General and Bariatric Surgeon in Chicago metropolitan area. Dr. Shayani has been in the forefronts of bariatric surgery, having participated in several clinical trials involving bariatric interventions and bariatric surgical devices. He offers his patients endoscopic and surgical interventions including gastric balloons, Lap Band Surgery and sleeve gastrectomy. He has performed several thousands bariatric procedures and is proud to have committed the vast majority of his clinical practice to management of bariatric patients. He has been an active member of regional and national societies including having reached the rank of President of the Illinois Chapter of ASMBS and the chairman of the membership committee at ASMBS. Dr. Shayani has several manuscripts, abstracts and book chapters to his credit and regularly presents at national bariatric meetings.
