Sugong Chen,

Dr. Chen is a Board Certified General Surgeon and Fellowship Trained Bariatric and Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgeon. He received his Fellowship training at Duke University and is currently a Staff Surgeon at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND, as well as a faculty member at the University of North Dakota. He performs a variety of bariatric (weight loss and metabolic) operations and advanced laparoscopic and robotic general surgical procedures.

Sanford Eating Disorders and Weight Management Center in Fargo is a multidisciplinary, patient centered enterprise aimed at helping people manage obesity and chronic illnesses associated with being overweight. Dr. Chen works closely with a team of dieticians, psychologists and medical weight loss physicians, and he is passionate about the treatment of obesity as a chronic disease and the potential for surgical cure of diabetes and other metabolic conditions. The Bariatric Surgery program here in Fargo is an American College of Surgeons accredited Center of Excellence (COE), and is endorsed by most health insurance plans.

The typical process for bariatric surgery begins with an one-on-one consultation with Dr. Chen. Although surgery is effective, it is only as effective as the education and preparation that goes around it. Also, no single operation is the right answer for everyone. At the consultation, Dr. Chen will chat with you and help you decide what operation may be best for you and discuss ways to help you prepare for surgery and live healthy in the long run. You will then meet with his experienced team members to help you navigate through insurance requirements and pre-surgical appointments.

Although Dr. Chen is from the South, he is proud to call the Midwest his home. He loves the warm people and the dynamic weather. He enjoys fishing (including on the ice) and a variety of outdoor activities. He also enjoys healthy cooking and loves to feed his family and friends.
