One of the most experienced bariatric surgeons in the nation, Dr. Nirmal
Jayaseelan, or Dr. Jay as his patients and staff like to call him, has performed
more than 10,000 weight-loss operations. His office is conveniently located in
North Dallas where he has practiced and performed surgery for the past 20
years. Dr. Jay and his staff offer every resource to care for the most complex
bariatric patients. Dr. Jay has performed weight-loss surgery on former NFL
players, Hollywood actors, and numerous physicians, and nurses. He is long
established in bariatrics and has been named one of the best bariatric surgeons
in Dallas by his peers in D Magazine for the past 14 years. Dr. Jay grew up in
Lubbock, Texas and received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering
from Texas Tech University. After a short career as a systems engineer, he
attended medical school at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center,
where he obtained honors in surgical research for a study on shock under
Dr.Tom Shires. He then completed a general surgery residency at Oregon Health
Sciences University. Dr. Jay has been trained by Dr. Don Trunkey, a world famous
trauma surgeon, Dr. Lee Swanstrom, president of the laparoscopic
society Sages, and Dr. John Porter, who is editor of the “Yearbook of Vascular
Surgery.” Laparoscopic weight-loss surgery in experienced hands offers patients
many benefits, while keeping risks very low. Dr. Jay has operated on patients
ranging from age 11 to 79 and those who have weighed more than 750 pounds.
He is considered a foremost expert in Lap-Sleeve and LAP-BAND® surgery,
both minimally invasive surgeries. Weight loss is gradual—about eight to 10
pounds per month and 60 to 100 pounds per year. The surgeries offer minimal
long-term complications when compared to gastric bypass.
Dr. Jay has instructed other surgeons about the sleeve and LAP-BAND®
operations. He is also performing and instructing surgeons on robotic-assisted
surgery. Dr. Jay has been recognized by the da Vinci robotics company as an
expert in bariatrics. Patients benefit from Dr. Jay’s insistence upon patient
compliance through numerous follow-up visits, support groups, and other
postoperative care opportunities. Follow-up is the key to success with bariatric
surgery, and this is where Dr. Jay’s practice excels. His experienced staff
ensures every patient receives compassionate and individualized care. A
multidisciplinary approach of nutritionists, psychologists, and former patients
help ensure success. Dr. Jay wrote and published a book about the LAP-BAND®
experience, “Lost and Found: A Guide to the LAP-BAND® Journey.” It’s a handson
manuscript meant for all banded patients, new and experienced. Dr. Jay
is board certified by the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American
College of Surgeons, and a member of the Texas Medical Association and
Dallas County Medical Society. He is also a member of the American Society
for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons. His practice is recognized by the Surgical
Review Corporation as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence.
