Nina Crowley, PhD, RD, LD is an advocate for patient-centered care and appropriate treatment for people with obesity. She leads the interdisciplinary metabolic and bariatric surgery team at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC. Nina has been working with weight loss surgery patients since 2007 and has her doctorate in Health Psychology from Walden University. Nina holds a BS in Nutrition Science from Cornell University and an MS in Health Care Policy and Management from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Nina is passionate about working with her patients to achieve difficult behavior changes and long term weight maintenance after weight loss surgery. Dr. Crowley has authored publications on binge eating behaviors and food cravings in bariatric surgery patients and enjoys presenting on weight regain, weight bias, vitamin/mineral supplementation, and the importance of careful language for impactful communication.
Nina enjoys balancing her clinical practice with research and volunteerism. Active in her local and state dietetic associations, Nina has served as District President and as South Carolina Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics President, and led the Public Policy Efforts at the state level as Public Policy Coordinator. She is integrated in the obesity workgroups across MUSC and SC including the Scale Down Strategic Plan for SC, and has been integral in developing the Medicaid Nutrition Counseling for Obesity Policy. Nina served as chair for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Evidence Analysis Library Bariatric Surgery Project and the Weight Management Dietetic Practice Group as Nominating Chair and Policy and Advocacy Leader. Nina is a proud advocate for the Obesity Action Coalition and serves on the Board of Directors. She is proud to work to integrate and unite professionals working towards increased access to obesity care. She's served the ASMBS as the Bariatric Society of the Carolinas Chapter IH Liaison and spearheaded the creation of an Integrated Health Workshop at the Carolinas Chapter Meeting. She’s been active in the IH Support Group Committee and on the ASMBS IH Executive Council as Member-at-large, Secretary and President Elect. Nina is the proud winner of the 2017 ASMBS Foundation LEAD Award for Excellence in Nutrition.
