Mustafa Hussain, MD, has advanced training in bariatric surgery and minimally invasive surgery of the upper gastrointestinal (foregut) system and abdominal wall (hernia). Dr. Hussain has expertise in all standard primary weight loss surgeries, including sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch. He also has a special interest in revisional bariatric surgery, particularly repairing failed Lap-Band procedures. Additionally, Dr. Hussain is working closely with the surgical oncology team to expand the use of minimally invasive and laparoscopic approaches in the surgical treatment of esophageal, pancreatic and gastrointestinal cancers.
Dr. Hussain has also pioneered the use of robotic surgery to treat abdominal wall, diaphragmatic and paraesophageal/hiatal hernias at the University of Chicago Medicine. He is interested in using robotics to expand the benefits of minimally invasive surgery to patients who once required abdominal wall reconstructions.
Along with his clinical work, Dr. Hussain is a dedicated educator and is a member of the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine's Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators.
