Dr. Michael “Logan” Rawlins, MD, FACS, FASMBS, is the Director of Bariatric Surgery at Trident Health - Summerville Medical Center in Charleston, South Carolina. Dr. Rawlins specializes in bariatric surgery and the treatment of obesity. He is an expert in surgical procedures that help people control their food intake, lose weight, and resolve obesity-related medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, dyslipidemia, sleep apnea, and reflux. Dr Rawlins performs all facets of bariatric surgery to include sleeve gastrectomy, roux-en-y gastric bypass, duodenal switch, SADI, and complex bariatric revision surgery. In addition, he commonly performs the spectrum of common general surgery abdominal cases such as gallbladder, colon, inguinal hernia, ventral hernia, hiatal hernia, and antireflux surgery, as well as EGD upper endoscopy and colonoscopy. Dr. Rawlins earned his medical degree in 2006 from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia, and then completed his general surgery residency at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. He then completed fellowship training in advanced minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Dr. Rawlins then served his country as a member of the United States Air Force for seven years. During his time at Travis AFB, California, he acted as the Chief of Minimally Invasive Surgery, Director of the Bariatric Surgery program, and Program Director for the General Surgery Residency. Lieutenant Colonel Rawlins deployed two separate times throughout the globe in support of our country’s ongoing national defense, first as the team lead of a mobile field ground surgical team (MFST) in the Middle East, then as a team leader of a Critical Care Air Transport Team (CCATT) where he moved critically injured veterans from austere locations back to higher level medical facilities. After his time in the military, Dr. Rawlins joined a high volume MBSAQIP certified bariatric program in Pittsburgh, PA, where he started a Bariatric Fellowship program to train the next generation of bariatric surgeons; he also became certified in advanced robotic surgery and completed over 500 robotic cases. Starting in 2024, Dr. Rawlins took over as the Director of Bariatric Surgery at Summerville Medical Center, Trident Health System, in Charleston, South Carolina. Dr. Rawlins is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is a fellow of both the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (FASMBS). Outside of work, Dr. Rawlins is married to his best friend, Melissa, and is the proud parent of three young children, Caleb, Carter, and Catherine. In his free time outside of work and driving the kids to all their sporting activities, Dr. Rawlins enjoys playing golf and is an avid macaron baker. Dr. Rawlins has authored numerous articles in many peer-reviewed journals in the field of weight loss surgery and frequently presents research, videos, and surgical techniques at national conferences. Dr. Rawlins also performs robotic surgery with the Intuitive da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system. Dr. Rawlins sees significant advantages with robotic surgery over traditional laparoscopy, given the advanced visualization, wristed instrumentation, and enhanced recovery from surgery with less postoperative abdominal wall discomfort.
