About the Provider

After obtaining his Fellowship in General Surgery with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2012, Michael has completed further advanced training in the field of Gastro-Oesophageal surgery through the highly competitive Australia and New Zealand Gastro-Oesophageal Association.

He has had intense training in not only general and acute surgical conditions but also with trauma surgery with postings at Westmead, Liverpool, Nepean and Royal North Shore Hospitals.
Michael received his Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery from Sydney University completing his degree with honours and has also achieved a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Medical Radiation Technology, Nuclear Medicine.

Michael has performed more than 2000 major operations with most of these being performed as minimally invasive procedures. A majority of these operations are for metabolic or weight loss surgery involving gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and management of gastric bands. He also manages patients with upper gastrointestinal cancer, hernias, gallbladder disease and performs regular public and private endoscopy/colonoscopy lists.

Michael has performed the first fully publicly funded bariatric operation at Blacktown Hospital in September 2017. He has also performed the first 3 stage minimally invasive thoracoscopic oesophagectomy at Nepean Hospital and the first Laparoscopic paraoesophageal hiatus hernia repair at Hospital for Specialist Surgery.

He is a dedicated teacher having held numerous teaching positions including a clinical academic appointment with Sydney University in Nuclear Medicine for 6 years. More recently he was accepted into the Academy of Surgical Educators. In 2013, Michael became an instructor on Early Management of Severe Trauma Course and is an examiner in the Royal College of Surgeons Clinical Examinations. He was an invited speaker at the Bariatric Masterclass sessions at the recent combined Royal Australasian College and American College of Surgeons Annual Scientific Congress May 2018.

He is a member of ANZGOSA, ANZMOSS, ASMBS and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Michael is a leading contributor to the national Bariatric Surgery Registry and performs more than 300 Bariatric procedures per year.

After working with numerous renowned mentors in the various fields of surgery, Michael is passionate about providing and maintaining a high level of care for his patients. Surgically his interests include gastric and oesophageal cancer surgery, anti-reflux surgery, hernia and laparoscopic/ minimally invasive techniques, weight loss surgery and surgical endoscopy.
