About the Provider

Dr. Joseph Greene is a board certified and fellowship trained Bariatric, Robotic, and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon. He received dual undergraduate degrees as a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts from Emory University. He then attended The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine where he was awarded his Doctorate of Medicine. During his medical school education, he sought out a Master’s in Business Administration with a special concentration in Health Sector Management and Policy from the University of Miami Herbert School of Business Administration. He returned to the Washington D.C. area to complete his residency in general surgery with MedStar Health – Georgetown/Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., primarily at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Following residency, he was accepted for fellowship in Bariatric and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital. Upon completion, he was recruited to Holy Cross Germantown Hospital as their first Medical Director of bariatric surgery, where he wrote the necessary procedures and protocols in preparation for the hospital site's first MBSAQIP Site Review and was successful in achieving as a comprehensive bariatric surgery center verification by the MBSAQIP. In 2023, he grew into his current role as Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery at Reston Hospital Center in Reston, Virginia.

Dr. Greene has extensive experience with both traditional laparoscopic surgery, as well as the advanced instrumentation and visualization of robotic bariatric surgery, which she offers to all of his patients. He performs a range of bariatric operations including Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG), Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB), Duodenal Switch (SADI), as well as Revisional and Conversion Bariatric Surgery. He also specializes in endoscopic procedures for bariatric patients, both before and after they have had bariatric surgery. In addition to bariatric surgery, Dr. Greene specializes in minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic general surgery, with extensive training on the Intuitive DaVinci Surgical System, including inguinal, ventral, umbilical, incisional, paraesophageal and hiatal hernia repair, anti-reflux surgery, stomach surgery, and gallbladder surgery. He has special interests in the fields of fluorescent guided surgery, and the evaluation of foregut and esophageal disease.

Dr. Greene is a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery. He is also a Fellow of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (FASMBS) and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). He is a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and the American Medical Association (AMA). He performs bariatric surgery and other minimally invasive general surgical procedures at Reston Hospital Center in Reston, Virginia. He has won numerous awards for patient care and research. His research has been presented at regional, national, and international conferences, as well as published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He has authored 5 peer-reviewed publications and 18 oral presentations, and has been invited to give lectures on laparoscopic and bariatric surgery. His interests include quality improvement in surgical care and patient safety. 

To that end, he has served on numerous peer review and quality improvement committees throughout his career, improving patient safety and increasing the quality of health care delivered to all patients.
Dr. Greene travels the country teaching surgical techniques to other specialists and currently serves on the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Access to Care Committee to expand access to obesity treatment services nationwide. Among other awards, he was recognized as a Top Doctor in Washingtonian Magazine in 2021, 2022, and 2023. When Dr. Greene isn’t taking care of patients, he enjoys staying active by Peloton spin cycling, bicycling, distance running, and altitude hiking. In addition, his hobbies also include automotive repair.
