John Dockins, MD, FACS FASMBS DABOM is the MBSAQIP Medical Director for Evergreen Hospital-Kirkland's Comprehensive Center of Excellence with Obesity Medicine Qualifications. He joined Evergreen Healthcare in October of 2020. His current practice includes medical and surgical treatment, 4 dietitians who specialize in weight loss, DM2, and general nutritional counseling, and a clinically intergrated team through Evergreen Healhcare's Weight Loss and Bariatric Care clinic in Kirkland, Washington. Dr. John Dockins grew up in Jackson, MS. He obtained a full academic scholarship to attend Xavier University of Louisiana, and graduated cum laude with a B.S. in Biology-Pre-Medicine. He proceeded to the University of Mississippi Medical School for his M.D, with general surgery as his primary focus of study. Dr. Dockins entered into a categorical general surgery residency program at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C., which is where he became interested in weight loss surgery. He left Washington, D.C. in 2011 for a formal, year-long fellowship in minimally-invasive bariatric surgery at the University of Missouri, where he studied under nationally respected surgery masters, including Roger de la Torre, Archana Ramaswamy Steven Scott, and Norbert Richardson. Dr. John Dockins entered private practice in Woodbridge, VA and worked out of Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center and Inova Fair Oaks Hospital Hospital, which were both Comprehensive Bariatric SUrgery Centers of Excellence. He transitioned from private practice to Sentara Surgery Specialists, where he was responsible for developing and implementing a brand new, state of the art, comprehensive Bariatric Surgery program. During this time, his practice was recognized system-wide for excellence in patient outcomes and satisfaction scores. He was also designated as a Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Quality Improvement Program Center of Excellence Verified Surgeon. Dr. Dockins believes that bariatric surgery is among the more demanding surgical disciplines, both technically and intellectually. “In order to provide the highest level of care, the bariatric surgeon must be fully invested in all aspects of the weight loss and wellness journey," said Dr. Dockins. "To be able to significantly improve or cure disease with lifestyle improvement, and medical or surgical tools, is miraculous and rewarding every single day." Dr. Dockins is also skilled in both interventional and diagnostic endoscopy for bariatric patients. He has devoted his career to providing a positive experience for every patient that he treats. His goal is to bring to Washingtonians safe, compassionate, high quality, and cost-effective care for obesity and the comorbidities associated with obesity. He was admitted as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and as a Fellow of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Dockins is also Board Certified in General Surgery and Obesity Medicine. Dr. Dockins believes that comprehensively educating patients about the benefits of lifestyle therapy and bariatric surgery is one of the most critical keys to weight loss success, and is an active participant in this process. He has performed over 200 in-person information sessions over the past five years. He was a two time presenter at the NBC4 health exposition in Washington, D.C, and has presented at numerous hospitals, federal government health fairs, online talk shows, and community health centers. He enjoys spending time with his wife Alia, and two sons, Ian and Kyle. He also enjoys reading, working out, and traveling. ​
