Success in medicine today, requires the ability to work with complex systems and organizations and to navigate a changing healthcare field. Early in my career as a transplant surgeon, I learned how to manage a complex patient care process within a complicated medical/hospital environment. As Senior Vice President for Physician Services I developed the skills to operate and direct a complex multidisciplinary physician group. As Medical Director of several bariatric surgery programs, I have directed an interactive team to achieve accreditation as a Center of Excellence and most recently as an accredited MBSAQIP Comprehensive center at two separate hospital systems. As a practicing surgeon, I bring this knowledge of complex systems to my interactions with patients helping them to navigate the insurance process. My variety of knowledge in abdominal surgery, laparoscopic surgery and bariatric surgery allows me to individualize my care for each patient crafting a plan to allow them to achieve long-term success. Medicine is always changing and physicians must adapt and expand our skill set. In 2017, I became certified in obesity medicine, creating a medical weight loss program and expanded the options to our surgical patients. In 2020, I learned robotic bariatric surgery and have brought that knowledge to three additional hospitals within the Catholic Health System expanding patient access to robotic bariatric surgery.
