Dr. Joel A. Ricci-Gorbea is a board-certified, fellowship trained general surgeon that specializes in weight loss surgery and hernia repair. He is a minimally invasive surgeon and performs most surgeries through small incisions using laparoscopy or the da Vinci® robotic platform. He was born and raised in Puerto Rico and is fluent in English and Spanish. He completed surgical residency training at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. This was followed by a minimally invasive fellowship at New York-Presbyterian/Queens. He came on staff as attending surgeon at New York-Presbyterian/Queens in 2011. Dr. Ricci-Gorbea is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of multiple surgical societies in the fields of weight loss (ASMBS) and hernia surgery (AHS). In addition, to his clinical practice, Dr. Ricci-Gorbea is involved in research, resident education, and quality and safety initiatives. He has co-authored several book chapters about disorders of metabolism and weight loss surgery.
Dr. Ricci-Gorbea performs minimally invasive weight loss surgery in the form of Laparoscopic/Robotic Longitudinal Sleeve Gastrectomy, Laparoscopic/Robotic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and revisional procedures including Lap Band Removal and conversion of sleeve to bypass among others. He is an Assistant Professor of Surgery for Weill Cornell Medicine at New York-Presbyterian/Queens, an MBSQIP approved Weight Loss Center of Excellence. Dr. Ricci-Gorbea also treats the full spectrum of surgical diseases including those related to the gallbladder, acid reflux, and the spleen. He is an expert in complex abdominal wall reconstruction and is proficient in the latest innovations in hernia repair. Using the da Vinci® robot, Dr. Ricci Gorbea repairs all types of hernias. This approach allows the patients to have less pain and a faster recovery after surgery.
