Dr. Isaias Irgau, MD, FACS, FRCS (Ed), FASMBS is president and co-founder of the Christiana Institute of Advanced Surgery (CHRIAS). He has extensive experience with minimally invasive weight loss surgery. Dr. Irgau is board-certified in bariatric surgery with the American Board of Surgery. In conjunction with his associate, Dr. Gail Wynn, he was the first to perform the LAP-BAND® procedure and the first to firmly establish the laparoscopic approach to Roux-n-Y gastric bypass in the state of Delaware. Dr. Irgau has personally performed over 2,000 bariatric procedures with excellent results. He and his associate Dr. Wynn started and established the Bariatric Surgery Program in three of Delaware’s leading medical centers. The American Surgery Center is Dr. Irgau's home out patient surgery center. With the addition of Dr. Michael Peters Jr., and Dr. Rahul Singh to CHRIAS, they eventually led the two hospitals to earn the prestigious designation of Center of Excellence in Bariatric Surgery – Christiana Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, and Bayhealth Medical Dr. Irgau graduated from Bristol University Medical School in England and has a double fellowship with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the American College of Surgeons. He has authored numerous publications and academic presentations and was elected Young Surgeon of the Year by the Delaware Chapter of the American College of Surgeons in 2006. He speaks fluent Italian, Tigrinya and Amharic. His interests outside medicine include current affairs, cinema and soccer. A resident of Delaware for the last 16 years, he lives in Wilmington with his wife, Nazreth and their four children Absara, Delina, Medhanie and Temesghen.
