Unlike many in his profession, Dilendra Weerasinghe, MD chose surgery as his specialty early onn while he was still in high school. He wanted to cure patients and improve their health by surgically treating them, instead of working in a specialty that treated chronic illnesses without a cure. Dr. Weerasinghe was attracted to the definitive treatment that surgery can often provide. Over the years, he learned that even if surgery was not able to cure a patient, he could always provide help by providing comfort. Dr. Weerasinghe believes in treating every patient with compassionate care, as if they were family. Outside of his work, he enjoys spending quality time with his children and lovely wife. Family is very important to Dr. Weerasinghe, so he makes it a priority for him and his family to share at least one meal a day together to stay connected. They also love traveling to different parts of the world to experience different cultures and enjoy doing volunteer work in Asia, including establishing free medical clinics and building houses for victims of the tsunami in 2005 and was instrumental in setting up the Bariatric surgical unit at the university of Colombo Sri Lanka.. Dr. Weerasinghe is Board Certified in General Surgery and is the Medical Director of Bariatric Services Rochester Regional Health, Rochester New York. He has pioneered the use of opioid free anesthesia which makes surgery safer and much more tollerable than before. Experience and surgical volume are critical predictors of safety and success in bariatric and laparoscopic surgical care, and Dr. Weerasinghe's success in both is unparalleled. Dr. Weerasinghe, pursued advanced training in robotic assisted surgery and is fellowship trained in both advanced GI/Minimally invasive surgery. He is a fellow of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (FASMBS) and a fellow of the American college of Surgeons (FACS). He is also a Bariatric endoscopist with experience Endoscopic primary and revisional surgery with the Apollo overstitch platform. He functions as proctor for robotic surgery and is commited to traininig the next generation of bariatric surgeons. He has presented at many local and international conferences and authored a book chapter on surgical technique. He is committed to gaining and sharing knowledge, clinical skills, and research skills throughout his career.
