About the Provider

Dr. Charles Kenneth Mitchell Jr. is the Medical Director for the Roper St. Francis Bariatric Surgery and Medical Weight Loss program, and is also Chief of Surgery at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital, in Charleston, SC. Dr. Mitchell’s work focuses on the surgical and non-surgical treatment of obesity and value-based quality care, with an emphasis on enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) and robotics. He is currently the President for the Bariatric Society of the Carolinas, and has served since 2018 as a site surveyor for the American College of Surgeons Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). Dr. Mitchell has been invited to present at multiple national meetings on topics such as surgical technique, enhanced recovery, opioid reduction, and quality improvement metrics. Clinically, Dr. Mitchell is a board-certified general surgeon with a practice currently focusing on the surgical treatment of patients with morbid obesity. He received his undergraduate degree in English from the University of Alabama, his medical degree from The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, and completed his general surgery residency at Vidant Hospital which is affiliated with East Carolina University. Dr. Mitchell has performed bariatric and metabolic surgery in private practice for over 25 years, and helped to establish two different comprehensive centers that have been accredited by ASMBS, the ACS and MBSAQIP; one in Pinehurst, NC, in association with FirstHealth of the Carolinas, and the other in Charleston, SC, in association with Roper St. Francis Healthcare.
