Dr. Alfonso Torquati, MD, MSCI, FACS, is the Helen Shedd Keith Professor of Surgery and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Rush University. A distinguished academic surgeon and leader, he is recognized for surgical excellence, research innovation, and elevating surgical programs through operational and scholarly achievement. Dr. Torquati earned his medical degree from the University of Rome "Tor Vergata," completed his general surgery residency at Oregon Health Science University, and pursued fellowship training in advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he also earned an MSCI degree. Prior to Rush, he held leadership roles at Vanderbilt and Duke University, directing major bariatric and metabolic surgery programs and advancing surgical innovation, faculty development, and multidisciplinary collaboration. At Rush, Dr. Torquati leads a diverse, multi-subspecialty department, driving operational improvements, academic productivity, and a culture of patient-centered care. He remains deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of surgeons and advancing the science of surgery.
