Charge:

In alignment with the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) mission to elevate global health and quality of life by significantly reducing the impact of obesity and its related illnesses, the Emerging Technology and Procedures Committee is tasked with advising the Executive Council, other committees, and the general membership on new technologies and procedures in the field of metabolic and bariatric surgery. This includes evaluating the impact of emerging technologies and procedures on patient care and educating members on their incorporation into practice.

Description:

The Emerging Technology and Procedures Committee plays a pivotal role in advancing the mission of ASMBS by evaluating and disseminating information on emerging technologies and procedures. By engaging stakeholders and providing educational resources, the committee aims to improve patient care, advance scientific understanding, and establish ASMBS as a recognized authority in the field.

Objective:

Engage all stakeholders in the field of emerging bariatric and metabolic procedures through educational sessions and web-based tools.

Rationale: This objective promotes knowledge exchange and collaboration, informing members about the latest advancements and best practices in emerging procedures.

Goals:

  • Facilitate early access to new technologies while ensuring their safety, efficacy, and compliance with regulatory approvals.

Rationale: This goal enables members to stay at the forefront of innovation, improving patient care outcomes and enhancing the reputation of ASMBS as a leader in the field.

  • Streamline and standardize emerging technology and procedural clinical research processes.

Rationale: This goal ensures the efficient evaluation and adoption of emerging technologies and procedures, accelerating their integration into clinical practice and enhancing patient care.

  • Committee involvement in Pathway for Endorsement of New Devices and Procedures Committee process.

Rationale: This goal enhances transparency and credibility, ensuring that endorsed technologies and procedures meet rigorous safety and efficacy standards, thereby bolstering member confidence and trust.

  • Establish ASMBS as one of the main societies for reference and authority for new surgical and endoscopic procedures to treat metabolic disease.

Rationale: This goal enhances the Society’s influence and visibility within the medical community and fosters collaboration with key stakeholders, ultimately advancing the field of metabolic and bariatric surgery.
