Company Description The OPTIFAST Program
The OPTIFAST® Program is a clinically proven weight loss program with documented outcomes in over 80 studies. The primary goal of the OPTIFAST® Program is to help participants improve their health through weight loss. The OPTIFAST Program involves specialty care of a multidisciplinary team to integrate the medical, nutrition, behavior, and exercise aspects of weight loss therapy. The OPTIFAST® Program includes a full meal replacement diet, restricting food options for a limited time. Research shows that as the variety of food choices decrease, caloric intake also decreases. This concept is termed stimuli narrowing and provides the scientific rationale for a full meal replacement diet.1 Benefits of using a full meal replacement diet include complete, balanced nutrition, precise calorie control (minimum 800-1200 calories/day), quick and simple preparation, pre-portioned servings, and reduced handling of food. Studies indicate that the major reason for success of the full meal replacement diet is not the severity of caloric restriction but rather the improved adherence possible with full meal replacement products as the only food choice available.2
After baseline screening and a history and physical, participants begin the full meal replacement diet in the active weight loss phase, which typically lasts 12 weeks. This is followed by a six-week gradual transition phase to self-prepared foods. Throughout the active weight loss and transition phases of the program, participants are medically monitored by the nurse and physician. Participants attend weekly group sessions with counseling covering nutrition, behavior, and activity changes. The long-term weight management phase is ongoing to assist participants in sustaining their weight loss and behavior changes.
