ASMBS CME MISSION STATEMENT
Purpose
The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery’s CME mission is to promote and develop quality education for surgeons, as well as the multidisciplinary team, to (1) improve the care and treatment of people with obesity and related diseases, (2) advance the science and understanding of obesity and metabolic surgery, (3) foster communication between health professionals on obesity and related conditions.
Content
Educational activities and quality improvement initiatives are based on ongoing assessments to advance the skills, clinical practices, research and to encourage and promote continued professional development. The activities are developed based on identified needs and gaps in knowledge, skills and proficiency to enhance the quality of patient care, optimize outcomes and improve quality of life. The goal of the Society’s CME/CPD Department is to produce education that supports a forum for exchange of information and ideas on current practice trends, evidence-based medicine and delivery of high-quality care.
Target Audience
Practicing surgeons, surgeons new to the field of metabolic and bariatric surgery, bariatric physicians and the multidisciplinary support staff involved in the care and treatment of the obese patient.
Types of Activities
Activities are presented through a variety of formats that include live educational meetings, enduring materials, and through the use of electronic media and are developed using a variety of modalities including skills labs, workshops, didactic sessions, debates, webinars, interactive sessions, panel discussions and networking.
Expected Results
Activities are designed to provide a strong base of knowledge that contributes to the lifelong learning of metabolic and bariatric surgery professionals and that advances the continuing professional development of the multidisciplinary healthcare provider’s performance, competence and/or patient outcomes.

The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
